Donnie Yen’s Caine is officially moving closer to becoming the next major chapter in the John Wick universe, with the martial arts icon returning to headline his own spinoff. The film, which Yen is also directing, continues the story of the blind assassin following the events of John Wick: Chapter 4.
When audiences last saw Caine, he had finally been freed from his obligations to the High Table. That ending left plenty of room for a new story, and it quickly became clear that fans were especially interested in what happened to the character after his brutal confrontation with John Wick.
For Yen, Caine is more than just another franchise spinoff. The actor and filmmaker has described the project as an opportunity to push the action genre further, with the goal of creating a definitive martial arts-driven action film while still respecting the style and world established by John Wick.
Production officially began in April 2026 and wrapped in August, putting the movie on track for a 2027 release. Lionsgate has not yet announced a specific premiere date.
Yen will be joined by Rina Sawayama, who returns as Akira, while newly announced cast members include Bill Nighy and Mason Thames. The screenplay comes from Mattson Tomlin, whose recent work includes the upcoming The Batman Part II and the adaptation of Keanu Reeves’ comic book BRZRKR.
The combination of Yen behind the camera and in the lead role could make Caine particularly interesting for martial arts fans. John Wick established a distinctive blend of gunplay, stunt work and close-quarters combat, and Yen now has the chance to push that formula toward something even more focused on martial arts.
With production complete and a 2027 release expected, Caine could become one of the most ambitious entries yet in the expanding John Wick universe.
