Brandon Sklenar is heading into dangerous territory in The Rescue, a new action thriller that puts a former rodeo cowboy on a desperate mission after his daughter is kidnapped for ransom. With time running out and the authorities seemingly unable to bring her home, he decides to take matters into his own hands.
The film follows Sklenar’s character as he sets out to track down his daughter, accompanied by her devoted dog. What begins as a rescue mission quickly becomes a personal war, with the former cowboy prepared to do whatever it takes to find his child and bring her home safely.
The Rescue is directed by Potsy Ponciroli, who recently delivered the largely silent period action film Motor City. His experience with stripped-down action makes the project particularly interesting, especially with a story built around a determined father rather than a traditional law enforcement hero.
The screenplay comes from veteran writer John Fusco, whose impressive genre résumé includes Young Guns, Thunderheart, and Walter Hill’s underrated Crossroads. Fusco’s background in Westerns and action-driven storytelling should give The Rescue a strong old-school flavor.
With a kidnapping, a rugged protagonist, and a rescue mission driven by family rather than duty, the film promises a straightforward action story with plenty of emotional stakes. Sklenar’s cowboy background also makes him a natural fit for the role.
The Rescue arrives exclusively in theaters January 29.
