Southpaw, a story of left-handed boxer Billy “The Great” Hope

Check out the second trailer to the Southpaw directed by Antoine Fuqua.

Plot: From acclaimed director Antoine Fuqua (“Training Day”) and starring Academy Award-nominated Jake Gyllenhaal (“Nightcrawler,” “Brokeback Mountain”) comes a story of tragedy, loss and the painful road to redemption… Billy “The Great” Hope (Gyllenhaal) is the reigning Junior Middleweight Champion whose unorthodox stance, the so-called “Southpaw,” consists of an ineloquent, though brutal, display of offensive fighting…one fueled by his own feelings of inadequacy and a desperate need for love, money and fame. With a beautiful family, home and financial security, Billy is on top both in and out of the ring until a tragic accident leaves his wife dead and sends him into a downward spiral. His days now an endless haze of alcohol and prescription drugs, his daughter taken by Child Services and his home repossessed by the bank, Billy’s fate is all but sealed until a washed up former boxer named Tick agrees to take the bereaved pugilist under his wing so long as he agrees to his strict ethos. Relentless and utterly committed to a fighter that thinks as much as he throws punches, Tick rebuilds Billy into a new man: one that is agile, fearsome and uncompromising in the ring while thoughtful, loving and disciplined outside of it. Now, as he works to regain custody of his daughter and mounts a professional comeback, Billy must face his demons head-on as he learns that, sometimes, your greatest opponent can be yourself.

From director Antoine Fuqua (TRAINING DAY) and writers Kurt Sutter (SONS OF ANARCHY) and Richard Wenk (THE MECHANIC) comes SOUTHPAW – the story of Billy “The Great” Hope, Junior Middleweight Boxing Champion of the World. When tragedy strikes and he loses it all, Billy enters the battle of his life as he struggles to become a contender once again and win back those he loves. SOUTHPAW stars Academy Award® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal, Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker, Rachel McAdams, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Rita Ora, Naomie Harris and Victor Ortiz.

Jake Gyllenhaal lost a bunch of weight for his Nightcrawler role, but it appears he gained it all back for his upcoming boxing flick Southpaw. The first image from the film has been released, featuring the actor’s new look for the Antoine Fuqua movie. The actor lost 30 pounds for that role and looked almost emaciated when compared to his normal appearance.

A few months ago Gyllenhaal told Variety he worked out six hours a day for six months for the role, and reportedly gained 15 pounds of muscle to play left-handed boxer Billy “The Great” Hope. Southpaw is a project that’s been in the works for a few years and Jake stars alongside Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Rachel McAdams, Naomie Harris and Forest Whitaker. The script was written by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter.

‘I just trained like a boxer,’ he said. ‘As you learn the skills, that stuff just happens in your mind and in your body.’ ‘We shot the fights in the first two weeks of the movie, so I trained for basically five months up to those fights. We shot four fights in a row,’ Jake told Extra.

Director Fuqua made it clear just how dedicated the actor was to his role, telling Deadline: ‘I think he broke up with his girlfriend because he was just in the gym every day.’ ‘He was training like a fighter. I had him sparring, really getting hit.’ ‘No one but fighters understand the sacrifice it takes to be a fighter,’ the director added.

Southpaw is a boxing term that designates the stance where the boxer has his right hand and right foot forward, leading with right jabs, and following with a left cross right hook. Southpaw is the normal stance for a left-handed boxer.
