Jon Cena as an CIA agent in Matchbox

John Cena is trading the wrestling ring for toy-inspired blockbuster action in the first look at Matchbox, a globe-trotting adventure based on Mattel’s iconic die-cast cars. Premiering on Apple TV on October 9, 2026, the film looks set to deliver high-speed chases, explosive stunts and plenty of comedy under the direction of Sam Hargrave, the filmmaker behind Netflix’s Extraction movies.

Cena stars as Sean, an undercover CIA agent who returns to his quiet hometown to reconnect with his childhood friends. What should have been a simple reunion quickly turns into an international nightmare when the group is drugged, kidnapped and framed for stealing a nuclear warhead. Suddenly, Sean’s lifelong friends find themselves hunted across the globe, forced to rely on instincts rather than espionage training as they race to clear their names and stop a global catastrophe.

Joining Cena is an impressive ensemble that includes Jessica Biel, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson, Teyonah Parris, Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll, and Bill Camp. With Hargrave behind the camera, fans can expect practical stunt work, inventive action sequences and the kind of kinetic pacing that made Extraction a hit.

Produced by Skydance Media and Mattel Studios, Matchbox is another major step in Mattel’s growing cinematic universe following the success of Barbie. While the title may evoke childhood nostalgia, the trailer makes it clear this is no family road trip. Instead, it blends buddy-comedy energy, spy-thriller intrigue and blockbuster action into a fast-moving adventure packed with car chases, shootouts and globe-spanning danger.

If the first footage is any indication, Matchbox could become one of the biggest action streaming releases of the year, giving John Cena another chance to prove he can headline high-octane spectacles with equal parts humour and heart.
