Academy Award nominees Ethan Hawke and Russell Crowe are joining forces for The Weight, a gripping new period action drama that promises survival, betrayal, and high-stakes adventure when it arrives in theaters on September 18.
Set in Oregon during the Great Depression in 1933, the film follows Samuel Murphy, played by Hawke, a desperate father who is torn away from his young daughter and imprisoned in a brutal work camp. His only chance at freedom comes from the ruthless Warden Clancy, portrayed by Crowe, who offers a dangerous bargain: smuggle stolen gold through unforgiving wilderness alongside a crew of hardened prisoners. As greed, betrayal, and violence threaten to destroy the mission, Samuel must decide how far he is willing to go to reunite with the family he left behind.
Directed by Padraic McKinley from a screenplay by Matthew Chapman and Shelby Gaines, The Weight also stars Julia Jones, Austin Amelio, Avi Nash, and Sam Hazeldine, adding further depth to its impressive ensemble cast.
Blending prison drama, wilderness survival, and tense action, The Weight looks set to deliver a compelling character-driven thriller. With Hawke and Crowe sharing the screen for the first time, the film has all the ingredients to become one of the standout adult dramas of the fall movie season.
