A new historical sports drama is stepping onto the mat with The Legend of Sambo, a film that revisits the origins of one of the world’s most influential martial arts. Directed by Andrey Bogatyrev, the movie blends biography, sport, and drama against the backdrop of 1936 Moscow.
Set during a pivotal Spartakiad tournament, the story brings together elite fighters from across the country for a decisive competition that will change lives forever. But beyond the mat, a much bigger story is unfolding — the birth of a new fighting system that would come to be known as sambo.
At the center are two legendary martial artists: Vasili Oshchepkov, who trained in Japan in judo from a young age, and Viktor Spiridonov, a veteran of the Russo-Japanese War developing self-defense techniques for real-world combat. Though their methods differ, both are driven by the same vision — to create a national fighting style for the Soviet Union.
Their journey is intertwined with that of their student Anatoly Kharlampiev, as ambition, rivalry, and innovation collide in a transformative era.
Starring Wolfgang Cerny and Dmitry Pavlenko, the film promises intense sports action, historical drama, and the story of a discipline born from vision and conflict.
