The Kingdom TV show returns for its second season with Alicia Mendez as a female fighter on board.
“We got the perfect person,” showrunner Byron Balasco tells EW. “We just shot a 10-hour fight scene with her where we thought she broke her foot because she was on crutches the next day, but she did that like halfway through and kept going and was just phenomenal.”
“It’s so much of what’s going on in the sport right now, it’s reflective of the world, and it also adds so much drama to the gym.”
For Alicia, joining the family at Navy Street is a great opportunity, but her arrival will change things. ”There’s a lot of shifting dynamics when she comes into the gym that put our characters on their heels,” Balasco teases of season 2. “She mixes things up for us.”
Kingdom returns on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 9 p.m. ET on DirecTV’s Audience Network.
Alvey owns NAVY ST. MMA, a gritty storefront gym/dojo in Venice, CA. A beloved MMA legend, he is a man of big appetites. He came up in a savage world, when MMA was closer to human cockfighting with no rules than a mainstream sport. He is a true warrior, carved on the Mt. Rushmore of MMA, but he doesn’t have a dime to show for it. He is in love with Lisa Prince, an extraordinary woman who tells him the truth. He has a fragile but evolving relationship with his two sons.
Kingdom is available from 8 July 2015 on Digital and DVD.
DirecTV’s Audience channel is premiering their new Kingdom tv show. Whether you like MMA or not, it’s definitely worth giving it a watch for the complex, troubled characters and relationships.
It stars Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Warrior), Kiele Sanchez (The Glades), Matt Lauria (Friday Night Lights, Parenthood), Jonathan Tucker (Parenthood), Nick Jonas, and Joanna Going (House of Cards, Mad Men).
Characters around the Navy St. MMA gym aren’t superficial or stereotypical in any regard. They each have their own reason to be at the gym or to be staying away. As complicated as they are on an individual level, their relationships with each other are even more complex.
If you’re a fan of MMA, you will enjoy believable and brilliantly choreographed fights.
Kingdom premieres Wednesday, October 8 at 9pm ET on DirecTV’s Audience.
