Henry Cavill in Chad Stahelski’s Highlander

Chad Stahelski is moving full speed ahead with his ambitious remake of Highlander, shaping the cult fantasy classic into a modern, large-scale action epic. Backed by an estimated $100 million budget, the film is led by Henry Cavill, with Russell Crowe also set to star, signaling a prestige-driven approach to the immortal saga.

The new Highlander draws directly from the 1986 original, which starred Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery, and Clancy Brown, and centered on immortal warriors locked in an endless battle to absorb each other’s power. Stahelski, best known for redefining modern action with the John Wick franchise, has described the property as a rare blend of mythology and emotion. He has pointed to its themes of immortality, love, and identity as the foundation for deeper characters and expansive action set pieces.

Adding weight to the cast, Dave Bautista is expected to take on the role of the Kurgan, the iconic antagonist previously played by Brown. The ensemble continues to grow with the addition of South Korean star Jeon Jong-seo and martial arts standout Max Zhang, hinting at a more global and physically driven take on the story.

Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists plan to release Highlander in theaters in 2027 or 2028.
