Fortitude is revealing a new World War II thriller from Simon West, the director behind Con Air and other action-heavy films. Based on an extraordinary true story, the 103-minute movie explores one of the most ambitious deception operations ever carried out during wartime.
Fortitude follows British spy-soldiers Dudley Clarke, played by Ed Skrein, and Thomas Argyll “TAR” Robertson, portrayed by Matthew Goode. Working with Winston Churchill, played by Michael Sheen, and Ian Fleming, played by Art Malik, the pair develops a massive plan designed to convince Hitler’s forces that the Allied invasion will strike somewhere completely different.
The operation relies on an army that doesn’t exist. Fake tanks, aircraft and ships are positioned to create the illusion of a massive military force, while actors, double agents and carefully constructed radio messages help sell the deception.
The film also features Nicolas Cage as Dusko Popov, the real-life spy who reportedly helped inspire James Bond, alongside Jordi Mollà as Juan Pujol and Alice Eve as British intelligence agent Nancy Armstrong.
Rather than relying purely on battlefield action, Fortitude turns espionage into its central weapon, showing how imagination, misinformation and psychological warfare helped prepare the way for D-Day.
With Simon West behind the camera and a remarkable true story at its center, Fortitude could deliver a very different kind of WWII thriller.
