Bloodaxe

The most feared warriors Bloodaxe

The battle for Norway’s throne is about to turn into a bloody family war in Bloodaxe, a new historical drama premiering January 20 on Prime Video. Created by Vikings showrunner Michael Hirst and Horatio Hirst, the series explores a turbulent period when royal ambition, religious conflict, and shifting alliances threaten to tear the Viking world apart.

The story begins in 927 AD, as the ailing King Harald Fairhair must choose his successor. Erik Bloodaxe, one of the most feared warriors of the Viking age, believes the crown is his birthright, but his claim faces challenges from every direction. His younger brother Haakon, raised in Christian Wessex under the influence of King Athelstan, prepares to return to Norway with an English fleet behind him.

With their brothers divided and powerful Jarls reconsidering their loyalties, Erik turns to his wife, Gunnhild, whose political instincts and diplomatic skills may prove as valuable as his strength in battle. Meanwhile, her father, King Gorm of Denmark, sees Norway’s instability as an opportunity to expand his own influence.

Religious differences further complicate the succession, as Haakon’s supporters demand that he abandon Christianity to claim the throne. As brother fights brother and ancient traditions begin to collapse, Bloodaxe builds toward a devastating siege that could destroy Erik’s stronghold and reshape Norway’s future.

The series promises an intense mix of Viking warfare, political intrigue, and family betrayal.
