Nick Cheung trained very hard for his six-pack abdomen to better personify his role as a boxer in Unbeatable.

Eddie Peng spoke of Nick’s professionalism, “He’s an admirable actor. Working with him is very comfortable. In many of his movies. In Nightfall, he lost significant weight. In Unbeatable, you will feel that he is a completely different film king.”

Eddie felt sorry for Nick’s extreme training and commented that this is his most “fear-provoking” movie to-date since he started his movie career. Eddie joked that director Dante Lam is a sadist and felt terrified every time he called out his name.

Unbeatable will arrive in mainland Chinese theaters in August and open in Taiwan in September 2013.

Nick Cheung took home the Best Actor award at the 16th Shanghai International Film Festival on June 23, 2013 after impressing the judges with his inspiring portrayal of a retired middle-aged boxing champion in the Hong Kong martial arts movie Unbeatable. Malaysian child actress Crystal Lee, who portrays Nick’s 10-year-old roommate in Unbeatable, won the Best Actress title.

Unbeatable made notable headlines in the Hong Kong media a few weeks ago when Nick released photos of his ripped body to a magazine. In regards to his win, Nick said, “It is not easy to win an award in Shanghai. Many foreign films join in the competition, and it becomes a difficult race. I am most surprised and happy that the very young Crystal Lee was able to become Film Queen. I will continue to strive and work hard. I thank all my costars and the backstage crew for their hard work.”

Film producer and director Wong Jing joked, “Nick Cheung’s super chocolate abs have destroyed all of Hong Kong’s men. Now that he is Shanghai’s Film King; he has destroyed all of Hong Kong’s actors. When he gets a boob job, will he destroy all of the world’s transsexual women?”

There is something pleasingly efficient about the title of Dante Lam’s (The Viral Factor, Storm Rider 2) latest foray into character driven action. The Hong Kong director is, after all, arguably the strongest action director working in the region today, his recent output excelling and finding a loyal audience around the globe in great part precisely because of their efficiency and no-apologies brawniness. So, a fight film from Lam titled simply MMA? Yes, that’s enough to capture the attention. That it features his regular leading man – Nick Cheung – is simply an added bonus.

Plot: FAI, once a world champion in boxing, escapes to Macau from the loan sharks and unexpectedly encounters QI, a young chap who is determined to win a boxing match. FAI becomes QI’s mentor and rediscovers his passion to fight not only in the ring but for his life and the cares.

Synopsis: After a stint in prison for participating in underground boxing, 48-year-old Fai is knee-deep in debt with no solution in sight. Once a contender in the boxing world, he is now a broken man who works in a gym as a janitor and an assistant instructor in weight loss classes. With no money, Fai is arranged to share a house with recovering mental illness sufferer Gwen and her 10-year-old daughter Dan. Even though their co-existence starts out as hostile, it slowly turns into a family-like bond – with Fai acting as the pair’s protector. Hot-blooded young man Qi was once the son of a rich man in mainland China. However, the family business failed, sending his dad into alcohol-fueled depressing and forcing Qi to take up black market jobs in Macau for survival. To inspire his father to stand up again, Qi enters an open MMA competition and starts training at Fai’s gym. However, Qi’s fourth opponent in the tournament is Lee Yuan-Heng – a fighter best known for his ferocity in the ring…
