The Pirates hunting for a gray whale

South Korean filmmaker Lee Suk-Hoon entering action-adventure territory with his new flick The Pirates.

The 10 billion-won project features adventure with two groups in the Joseon Dynasty period ― one made of pirates and the other of bandits ― who desperately try to hunt down a whale that swallowed the royal seal of Joseon.

The Pirates stars Kim Nam-Gil, Son Ye-Jin, Sulli, Lee Kyoung-Young, Yu Hae-Jin and Oh Dal-Su.

The Pirates releases domestically this summer, but already struck gold at Cannes, selling up to 15 countries including North America.

The Korean film industry attained a meaningful achievement last year by selling more than 200 million tickets for the first time in history. Following this year’s success, the country’s major film producers recently announced their lineups for 2014. And it seems like local moviegoers will be bombarded with period blockbusters next year.
